How To Train A Cockatiel Requirements- Do You Have What It Takes For Parrot Training?

How To Train A Cockatiel Requirements- Do You Have What It Takes For Parrot Training?

Not knowing how to train a cockatiel can end up being disastrous, cockatiels are great pets, but have the ability to get very nasty if they are left to their own devices. Ideally it is best to start parrot training at a young age, but that is not always convenient for most bird owners. Below I will point out 6 requirements you will need to commit to before parrot training can take place.

The 1st Requirement of how to train a cockatiel starts with trust

An absolutely essential part of parrot training is TRUST, it will take a bit of time to build your parrots trust, but it is well worth the effort in the end.

The 2nd Requirement of how to train a cockatiel is to spend quality time with him.

Spending quality time with your parrot each day sets the foundation for your relationship, it is essential. 20 to 30 minutes is all it take, initially playing with him, then 20 minutes training, and 20 minutes playing. Make a point to place his cage in an area where you and your family spend the most time.

The 3rd Requirement of how to train a cockatiel is to have patience

.Never try to rush your bird to interact with you, give him time as change does up set birds, so they need to be fully settled in before you try to remove them from there cage and start teaching them things.

The 4th Requirement of how to train a cockatiel is always use positive reinforcement.

Never, never physically punish him that is the worst mistake you can make, if you raising your voice, or bang on his cage or the trust will be lost, and it will take twice as long to gain that back. Trust me on that 1.

Parrots love praise and respond really well to it, giving him his favorite treat will also clock up points. use these 2 things to your best advantage. Make a BIG deal out of it when he does something right, then give him his treat, you will win him over in no time.

The 5th Requirement of how to train a cockatiel is to be consistent

Repetition is the best tool you have for getting him to learn new things, it is essential to repeat new trick over and over, and over till he gets it right. Using low soft tones, and always speak slowly, this is the key to parrot training. It is also important that all training session take place at the same time, and make sure it isn’t his sleep time, or feed time other wise you will be flogging a dead horse.

The 6th Requirement of how to train a cockatiel is not to give up.

It requires a lot of patience so never give up, once he has the basic he won’t forget them. Parrots have a great memory and can relate certain words or whistles to actions, or people.

Try to consider this when you start training: if you where learning another language, could you pick it up in just 1 lesson? Certainly not, if you could you would be a genius, congratulations.

So please use that same concept with speech training for your parrots. Do you think you could follow those 6 requirements on how to train a cockatiel?

I bought a new cage and tree for the Cape Parrot baby I will soon be getting. I am a bit worried about Kili displaying territorial aggression toward the new parrot as she has been here first. So I bought the tree and cage well ahead of time so that I could have time to get her used to NOT going on the other bird’s places. I had Kili fly recalls to and from her foraging tree. I placed the new tree (for other parrot) next to hers and made sure to reward her only for going to hers and not the new one. I am predominantly using positive reinforcement to encourage going on her tree more than the desire to check out the new one. I am using the same technique to keep her off the new bird’s cage.

How to train a spoiled parrot?

Question by Abigail: How to train a spoiled parrot?
My african grey has received lots of scratches(which it really likes) and now whenever I try to teach it to step up, it just ignores me and asks for a scratch. Is there a way to fix this?

Best answer:

Answer by N B
I have 11 birds including an African Gray. If it wants a scratch, tell it in a firm voice, ‘No.’ then tell it to step up again. if it attempts to bite you, tap its beak and say again in a firm voise no. We just grab ours by the body then put it on our arm. Not sure if it will work with your bird but we can try. Hope this helped

We have a sun concure parrot who is about 3 months old. How do you train it to use its cage for bathroom use?

Question by Kirby Miller: We have a sun concure parrot who is about 3 months old. How do you train it to use its cage for bathroom use?
We bought this parrot when it was one month old so we have had it for about two month now. My husband and I have hand-fed this bird and now he is eating on his own in his cage. He has lots of attention and various times of the day out of his cage. It seems that he waits to come out of the cage to poop because his cage is pretty clean. We love to give him attention but are tired of the constant pooping on furniture or us. There has to be a way to have him use his cage. When we have him out of his cage, we leave the cage door open so he has access whenever he wants to go into his cage, do his thing, and come back out. We also have sticks near the cage so he can land and walk into the cage making it easier for him to get in the cage. He can do it because we have put him on the sticks and watched him walk in and come back out again. Please help.

Answer by STACEY S
next time he does it leave him in his cage for a few days , then take him out after he’s done making his mess. If he messes while he’s out of his cage put him back in it(cage) after a while of doing this he should get the hint. Have fun!!!

African Grey’s are BIG birds.
Also, they WILL scream; no matter what you do..
Try http://www.google.com I am sure you can find out tons of information.
He probably isn’t afraid of people, he just needs more time to warm up.
