Q&A: Why does my african grey parrot bite me everytime I try to touch him?

Question by D.H: Why does my african grey parrot bite me everytime I try to touch him?
I have an african grey parrot and he is really friendly with me, he steps up when he’s asked, and he whistles and talks and does not have any behavioral problems. He only bites me every time i want to scratch his head or touch him.

I want to know how to train him to stop biting… does spraying him with water every time he bites help?
How can I get him to trust me so I can touch him?

I love him and I really want him to feel safe.

Probably because he’s scared. If you did not have him since he was very young he probably doesn’t trust you. I have the same thing with an adult Indonesian parrot while the owl that i saved after it fell out of the nest is soft and friendly

Q&A: Why does my little parrot flyaway from me and tries to bite?

Question by Raphael O: Why does my little parrot flyaway from me and tries to bite?
I just got a very little parrot two months ago, but it flies away from me each time i try to touch it, also it tries to bite and that scares me off. Is it because its too young? I don’t think its gonna respond to training because of its age.
I think its an illiger Mini macaw, it has black head and beak, and then green feather and a little yellow underneath the feather with black legs

You don’t mention what species parrot. Some are hands-on birds and others are hands-off.

In two months it should be learning to trust you some, unless you’ve tried too hard to handle it and it doesn’t trust you yet. I’d guess it’s biting out of fear. And you don’t want it living in fear.

Give it time to adjust and get to know you.

Don’t open the door for it to fly away, but sit by its cage and talk to it, read to it.

Calmly attempt to touch it and its feet through the bars of the cage. Let the touching increase gradually.

If the breeder lives close to you, ask the breeder to clip the wings just enough that it can’t fly wildly, but can still glide to the floor if it startles and jumps from its perch or cage. You don’t want it crashing to the floor and breaking a bone.

If it can’t fly, you have more control.

If it’s a hands-on type bird (google the species and find out) patience and determination will get you there. If it’s not a hands-on-type bird, then I’d suggest you swallow your disappointment and allow it to just be.

Training Parrots Not To Bite – Pro Techniques!

Training Parrots Not To Bite – Pro Techniques!

Parrot’s are some of the most beautiful birds in the world and they can be tons of fun, but there’s one huge reason that so few people have them! They’re ridiculously hard to train! You ever been around an untrained parrot? Well it sucks! Untrained parrots are louf, obnoxious, and if you get too close to them, they bite!

Train Your Parrot Not To Bite Now!

How To Train a Parrot Not To Bite

The first thing you want to do is skip everything you already know or think you know about training parrots, because nine times out of ten, what you think you know is completely wrong! You don’t want to practice poking at your parrot with a twig or hit your parrot everytime is bites your finger, these are only going to damage your parrot and ruin your relationship with it!

You Want To Do It Right

When training a parrot not to bite, you want to focus on doing things like not letting your parrots perch be near a window. When your parrot is near a window in it’s early stages with you, you’re going to neglect you due to the fact that it sees you as the one thing keeping it from going outside, so of course it’s going to try and bite you, because it’s trying to escape!

Conclusion

Nothing about Parrot training is easy, and if you want to train your parrot not to bite, you’re going to need a professional parrot training guide. You won’t have to spend a bunch of money on hiring a professional parrot trainer or anything like that but you will probably need to spend a few dollars on getting a professional parrot training guide. Good luck!
